Seraph Kumar—Senior Product Designer

About

My journey into design began at the age of 5 when I immigrated to the US. I had the joy of walking on my first sidewalk and obeying my first traffic light. These seemingly ordinary experiences sparked a fascination with how design shapes our daily lives. By the age of 17, I was already crafting banners and logos for local jewelry and pawn shops, laying the foundation for my foray into product design.

Fast forward over a decade, and I've had the privilege of working on a diverse range of products across various industries, from microfluidic chips to online payment platforms you may have used yourself. Through these experiences, my faith in design has only deepened. For me, design is more than just aesthetics; it's a powerful practice for creating a world that takes care of us.
I currently reside in sunny Los Angeles with my family. Near my home is the ever-spirited University of Southern California, where I’m pursuing an MS in Product and Business as a part-time student. I firmly believe that education is a lifelong endeavor that will continue to mold my perspectives.

During weekends, I embrace my love for music as I put together my first album. Rumbling bass, luscious pads, and distorted choirs compose my signature sounds. If you ever visit Amoeba Music on Hollywood Blvd, you might find me hunting for records to sample.

Projects

Ad Analytics Platform

While Hawthorne may have pioneered the infomercial, the landscape of advertising had evolved. Modern ad agencies now captivate their clients with sleek, visually striking reports. Hawthorne needed to catch up.

I spearheaded our product team in developing our first ad analytics platform, empowering our clients to monitor the performance of their campaigns. In pursuit of innovation, I designed the "heat-map graph" to front-end our proprietary channel ranking model. This graph enabled clients to swiftly navigate through thousands of data points in seconds, facilitating easy comparison of KPIs.

My overarching objective was to make data visualizations that told stories of how KPIs influence one another. The outcome was deeper conversations, expedited meetings, and increased time dedicated to strategic collaborations.

Bill Payments Platform

If you're a Capital One customer who has used their bill pay feature, I'm delighted that I played a role in your user experience. BillGO offers a B2B2C bill payment platform utilized by major banks nationwide. However, before expanding our platform, we recognized the need to address our UX debt.

I started the redesign with a foundational hypothesis: money is stressful. After conducting a month-long ethnographic study, we validated this hypothesis. We uncovered unique financial goals and challenges spanning all generations of users.

These insights drove my design of new streamlined payment flows, alleviating pain points for all our users. The result is a lighter onboarding process, a measured reduction in user churn, and a revitalized, confident visual design.

Property Management Platform

Companies like Blackstone and Meta own vast property portfolios across the globe. Archipelago offers an AI-powered platform tailored for managing these extensive property holdings and their insurance data.

Navigating through immense volumes of data is a significant challenge for our users. To address this, I redesigned key parts of our platform's information architecture. I also implemented better filters, sorting features, and labeling methods. These solutions improved the UX and also compensated for the limitations of our machine learning algorithms. While AI is a powerful tool, it is still evolving to meet our ever-growing expectations.

Previously, users would spend an average of 10 minutes locating just one property and its relevant documents. After implementing my new features, it would only take a minute at most

Scientific Equipment

NASA and institutions worldwide rely on UEC's genomics lab for cutting-edge research and state-of-the-art tools. Collaborating with some of the brightest minds in the field ignited a fire within me.

The passion drove me to design the world's most cost-efficient microfluidic chip and the first-ever corrective spin-coater. I kickstarted and led these projects, and authored my process along the way. My foray into hardware design profoundly changed how I approach software design too.

My innovations significantly reduced the cost of research projects and slashed experiment times by an average of 5 hours (about 50%), setting a new standard in efficiency.

Freelance

Every journey has a beginning. Over the course of my freelancing career, I've worked with clients of all shapes and sizes from five different continents. I've designed a wide array of products, ranging from a construction management app developed for the Australian government to a hospice care app for nurses and the elderly.
